Covid-19, Cost of Insulin, Type 1 Diabetes, and Medical Concerns

Please allow me to express a few thoughts that I've been struggling with. The following blog post is my personal opinion, thoughts, and/or experiences. It is not medical or professional advice. If you have any questions or doubts about any information within this blog post, please speak to your medical professional for resources and advice. They will be able to point you in the right direction.

The Covid-19 pandemic appears to be raging on. My heart goes out to all of those that have been affected by loss of your loved ones, financial burdens, mental health struggles, and other challenges. EVERYONE is facing some type of struggle. Please be kind to one another.

I am angry, disappointed, and heartbroken. We all face struggles at some point in our lives. However, the past couple of years has brought on more challenges than some can handle. Alienation and division...people are fighting over politics, mandates, and Covid-19 vaccinations. Inflation is rising faster than wallets can be filled. Individuals are struggling with their mental and physical health.

The pharmaceutical companies are raking in billions of dollars due to Covid-19 vaccinations and testing. This is where I must express my personal bitterness with the response to the pandemic. The government is paying for FREE Covid-19 vaccinations and testing for everyone in the United States. Please don't get me wrong. I am pleased that people are receiving assistance with testing and vaccinations if wanted/needed. I am upset that there are minimal solutions to other life-saving medical needs.

There are millions of individuals that cannot afford their medications and/or medical care. Diabetics, cancer patients, elderly care, and others are struggling. Co-pays, deductibles, and premiums are astronomical for most insurance plans. Millions of people cannot afford to purchase medical insurance and don't qualify for health insurance programs. People are having to choose between a life-saving medical procedure, medications, or other necessities.

Did you know that most medical procedures and medications are MUCH more affordable or free in other countries? The cost of medical care and medication is presumed to be the highest in the United States. If I could cross the border over to Mexico or Canada, I could purchase my daughter's life-saving insulin for a fraction of the cost in the USA. My daughter is a newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic. She will die without insulin. She is only 20 years of age and will be on insulin for the rest of her life.

Why is insulin so expensive in this country? According to several sources found on the internet, a vial of insulin costs an average of $2.28-$6.16 to produce. Why are they charging such an astronomical price for insulin?! Did you know that many diabetics are rationing their insulin due to financial restraints? Rationing insulin can be lethal to a diabetic. Insulin and other life-saving medications should not be this expensive. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed in America.

**Be sure to contact the pharmaceutical companies to find out about any discount program they may be offering for the uninsured and/or underinsured. Some companies may advertise discounts on their individual website. Unfortunately, some companies do not offer any publicized discounts. However, it doesn't hurt to contact them directly or speak to a medical professional for information or resources.

There is a misconception that a diabetic is the cause of their own condition. There are differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetic conditions. Type 1 diabetes is caused when their body (pancreas) does not produce enough insulin. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that has no cure. There are several complications associated with this condition.

My daughter was diagnosed over the summer when she was hospitalized for Diabetic Ketoacidosis and has experienced multiple complications due to her condition. She has already endured two surgeries to remove severe cataracts from both of her eyes, her glucose levels are difficult to stabilize, and she has other complications as well. Her emotions are also on a constant rollercoaster ride, BUT she is a fighter! I cannot tell you how proud I am of her!

Thank you for reading my blog post about Covid-19, the cost of insulin, Type 1 Diabetes, and other concerns with healthcare. I hope you have a wonderful day, and I hope you are able to obtain the resources needed to assist you with any needs you may have. I will be sharing more content on diabetes in the coming days.

Celebrating? Do NOT Drink and Drive!

Millions of individuals will be celebrating the New Year with cocktails and other alcoholic beverages on New Year's Eve. Many of the United States and other countries offer low cost or free designated driver programs. If a program is not available in your location, please seek assistance from a loved one who will be available if you decide to have a few celebratory drinks.
Thousands of fatal or serious accidents are caused by drunk drivers. Many victims are seriously injured or parish due to injuries sustained from the accident. These accidents are preventable. No one should lose a loved one or experience a life changing event due to an ignorant decision of the intoxicated driver.
If you cannot find a designated driver; the celebration should be conducted in a location that you plan to spend the night. Please don't put your life or other innocent lives at risk. DRUNK DRIVING IS NEVER OKAY. There is no excuse in getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
On a more personal level, I know someone who drove while intoxicated. He killed three women over this choice. This man spent a few years in prison, currently on conditional house arrest, and has to live with what he has done for the rest of his life. I honestly don't know how this man didn't get as much time as he served. However, the courts say that he paid his dues. I couldn't imagine having to live the rest of my life knowing that I caused three innocent deaths due to an irrational decision to drink and drive.
This website provides information on drunk driving and statistics. The website also includes information on victim services.

Celebrate the New Year responsibly!

Are you prepared for the winter?

As the temperatures continue to drop around the nation, are you prepared for the winter weather that is coming upon us? I've been discussing this topic with my husband. I'm concerned more about the potential weather this year than previously. Possibly because, this region is due for a severe winter. We haven't endured a winter crisis here as of yet. Not since relocating, but we've heard stories. We have dealt with minimal ice and snow, but nothing that hindered us for a long period of time.

We live down at the end of a two-mile country road. Lovely tree's surround the road all the way down. Our landlord is the closest neighbor within safe walking distance. He does have large equipment that could help us get out of our driveway if needed. He plowed for us when it snowed. Now, I do LOVE snow! I'm okay if it snows here, but I don't want an ice storm to hit. That is an entirely different story. We definitely need to order some more propane soon. We use it for heating. I have electric heaters, but if the power goes out...

I've already picked up one 25 pound bag of ice melting salts, but would like to pick up a couple more. Some additional items that I'd like to stock up on, are:

Bottled Water
Additional blankets
Non-perishable foods that can be consumed with or w/o heating.
Baby wipes to freshen up in case of power outages (electric water heater)
Batteries
And various other items.

It wouldn't hurt to have these items on hand all through the year. We experience severe weather with tornadoes as well. It's much different than when we lived in California. I've been asked how I could handle living in a region where tornadoes are common. My reply was "You cannot see an earthquake coming, you can at least see, hear, or know that a tornado is coming." Still doesn't make it any less scary, but I'd rather know what is about to happen!

DON'T FORGET to check on your neighbors, disabled, and elderly!

You can visit Ready.gov for information on winter preparedness.

Give the gift of hope this season

I enjoy the autumn season, but with it comes cooler temperatures. There are millions of homeless and less fortunate individuals out there. They are struggling to stay warm, find a warm meal, and find shelter. Many of the larger cities offer shelters within a church or traditional homeless shelter. However, smaller communities lack enough resources to properly assist those in need. Food pantries may also be scarce or running low on supplies.

I encourage you to go through your homes. Look for jackets that are no longer needed, extra blankets, warm clothing, hats, gloves, shoes, socks, anything to help warm someone in need. If there are no shelters or clothing pantries nearby, seek out those who are less fortunate. If you find a homeless person on the streets, offer a blanket and/or a few supplies. Visit a school and speak with the counselor about a potential family in need. Let them know what you have to offer. Social Services and DHS may know where to donate.

Look through your own food cupboards or pantry. See if there is something, anything you could share with another family. No donation of food is too small to someone that is trying to figure out how to feed themselves or their children. I encourage you to give the gift of hope this season. I challenge you to make this part of a regular routine. While you are sitting in a heated room with a lovely meal on the table, another family may be freezing and severely hungry.

Tornado Preparedness 2013 Season

It's that time of year again when the fierce storms hit certain parts of the United States. We've already witnessed the devastation this year. A tornado can strike anywhere, no state/country is exempt. What better time than to bring back a post I had made for the last two tornado/severe weather seasons. I hope you find some useful information posted here.

I'd like to focus a moment on being prepared for an emergency if a disaster should strike your area. Though you could never be fully prepared, you can take comfort in knowing that you have taken steps to help and protect your family the best way that you can.

Mother nature has proven once again just how violent she can be. Hundreds of lives lost, thousands displaced, moderate and severe damages....my heart goes out to all of those affected by these storms. Get to know your neighbors. Don't be afraid to lend a hand once your family is safe.

This website is rich in great information: NOAA Tornado guide

Here is a snippet from the website listed above-

What causes tornadoes?

Thunderstorms develop in warm, moist air in advance of eastward-moving cold fronts. These thunderstorms often produce large hail, strong winds, and tornadoes. Tornadoes in the winter and early spring are often associated with strong, frontal systems that form in the Central States and move east. Occasionally, large outbreaks of tornadoes occur with this type of weather pattern. Several states may be affected by numerous severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

During the spring in the Central Plains, thunderstorms frequently develop along a "dryline," which separates very warm, moist air to the east from hot, dry air to the west. Tornado-producing thunderstorms may form as the dryline moves east during the afternoon hours.

Along the front range of the Rocky Mountains, in the Texas panhandle, and in the southern High Plains, thunderstorms frequently form as air near the ground flows "upslope" toward higher terrain. If other favorable conditions exist, these thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Tornadoes occasionally accompany tropical storms and hurricanes that move over land. Tornadoes are most common to the right and ahead of the path of the storm center as it comes onshore.

Tornado Myths:

MYTH: Areas near rivers, lakes, and mountains are safe from tornadoes.

FACT: No place is safe from tornadoes. In the late 1980's, a tornado swept through Yellowstone National Park leaving a path of destruction up and down a 10,000 ft. mountain.

MYTH: The low pressure with a tornado causes buildings to "explode" as the tornado passes overhead.

FACT: Violent winds and debris slamming into buildings cause most structural damage.

MYTH: Windows should be opened before a tornado approaches to equalize pressure and minimize damage.

FACT: Opening windows allows damaging winds to enter the structure. Leave the windows alone; instead, immediately go to a safe place.

More important information from NOAA:

Look out for:

Dark, often greenish sky

Wall cloud

Large hail

Loud roar; similar to a freight train

Before the Storm:

-Develop a plan for you and your family for home, work, school and when outdoors.

-Have frequent drills.

-Know the county/parish in which you live, and keep a highway map nearby to follow storm movement from weather bulletins.

-Have a NOAA Weather Radio with a warning alarm tone and battery back-up to receive warnings.

-Listen to radio and television for information.

-If planning a trip outdoors, listen to the latest forecasts and take necessary action if threatening weather is possible.

If a Warning is issued or if threatening weather approaches:

-In a home or building, move to a pre-designated shelter, such as a basement.

-If an underground shelter is not available, move to an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor and get under a sturdy piece of furniture.

-Stay away from windows.

***Additional Items to Consider Adding to an Emergency Supply Kit:

*Prescription medications and glasses

Reminder: Tornado Preparedness

Yes, I know this was posted last month. However, it doesn't hurt to post again. I might share this post with my readers, on a monthly basis during the severe weather season. I'm ashamed to admit, I am not fully prepared at this time. I desperately need to work on a new storm plan.

It's that time of year again when the fierce storms hit certain parts of the United States. What better time than to bring back a post I had made for the last two tornado/severe weather seasons. I hope you find some useful information posted here.

I'd like to focus a moment on being prepared for an emergency if a disaster should strike your area. Though, you could never be fully prepared, you can take comfort in knowing that you have taken steps to help and protect your family the best way that you can.

In this post, I'd like to focus on Tornadoes as I currently live in Mississippi where they are common. Some say that they would rather endure an earthquake than a tornado but, to be completely honest here as I have lived in both an earthquake state and tornado state, I'd have to say I feel it's better going through tornado weather. I only say this because, you are warned most of the time when it is coming as with an earthquake, there is no warning. This doesn't mean I am not scared of the storms here as they are quite intense!

In the past year, mother nature has proven once again just how violent she can be. Hundreds of lives lost, thousands displaced, moderate and severe damages....my heart goes out to all of those affected by this system they say happens to be the worse storm in decades. I'm not going to lie, I was frightened!

Please don't do as my husband and I did, this past year...we stood there watching and praying while watching the tornado clouds heading towards our home as we didn't have anywhere to protect ourselves. The shock and overwhelming feelings took over. Don't let this happen to you! My husband and I are in the midst of preparing better plans for any future tornadic storms. Our home was spared and we are very grateful and thankful to be alive and still have a home.

Be Prepared with Survival-Goods.com

**ALL STOCK PHOTO'S, LOGO & PRODUCT DESCRIPTION IS PROPERTY OF SURVIVAL-GOODS.COM***

Emergency situations occur everyday. Whether it’s an earthquake, tornado, flood, fire, hurricane, storm, or another disaster, you need to be prepared. Being prepared for such emergencies can make a significant difference in your chances of survival. The time to be take action for Emergency Preparedness is now, not when a disaster strikes!

It is ideal to store enough food and water in a safe place for each member of the family. Some might feel that food and water is the only necessities a family will need during an emergency. This misconception can lead to a miserable ordeal and can certainly lesson your chances of survival.

Yes, food and water are important, but what about flashlights, matches, blankets, water purification tablets, toiletries, radio, cell phone, etc.? How about a written emergency plan that can be sprung into action if the need arises? Your children need to know where a safe haven is to meet with you if you may get separated.

If my children are in school, my son and daughter are to find one another if deemed safe and wait together until my husband or myself, come to find them. They are in good hands, the school has several active plans in place and will do their best to care for all of the children.

It’s important to keep calm during an emergency situation. If you lose your cool, so will the rest of your family. While I understand that this could be a stressful and frightening time, think about your children. Children feed off of the emotions of adults. If you are stressed out, they will be as well. It will be tougher to keep everything together if you don’t keep your head on straight. Stay calm and reassure your family that they will be ok.

I’d like to share a company that I recently discovered while browsing the internet. Survival-Goods.com sales a variety of survival products for the home, office, school, and more. I am so impressed with this company, I’ve decided to take the product I received and share it with my son’s Boy Scout troop. It was a pleasure speaking to the owner of Survival-goods.com. He is willing to speak with anyone who has concerns and/or questions about the products.

I received the two (2) person Deluxe Honey Bucket Kit and have to admit, I’ve never considered having a “portable potty” during an emergency. Have you? This does make sense, where would you use the facilities if a disaster situation arose? The honey bucket consists of the bucket and a sturdy, plastic toilet seat in the shape of a traditional toilet.

The only thing that I wish was different, is the food bars. I'd like to see them in individual wrappers (They are available for purchase individually). I haven't opened any of the food bars and cannot tell you how they taste. However, I've been assured that they are delectable.

I’d like to share a tidbit of information about some of the products I received in my kit. If your family needs additional items, they are readily available for purchase. Organizing your bucket, provides extra room for similar products. Or, you can purchase an additional, empty Honey Bucket to fill. It doesn’t hurt to have more than one kit in an emergency.

Angels for Animals

Angels4Animals, a non-profit organization and a program of Inner Voice Community Services, has a mission to serve as the guardian angel of animals whose caretakers find themselves in difficult financial situations. At Angels4Animals we believe that animal owners should not have to say goodbye to the animals that they love. Our services range from financial aid to complete treatment to those pets and pet owners in need.

Brown Dog Foundation

We will do our best to work with you through crisis situations. However, Brown Dog Foundation is not fully-funded, nor are we staffed full-time. It is important that you are comfortable with the fact that not all families meet our criteria and while, a family may pass our Pre-Qualification Screen they may not pass the full Application Screen. There are many reasons that may lead to a denial. When we have more cases than we can afford to fund presented at one time, we are forced to review each family's entire application and compare to one another to make our decision.

Canine Cancer Awareness

Canine Cancer Awareness, Inc. is a tax-deductible non-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness of the prevalence of canine cancer, its effects and the available treatment options.

Donations made to Canine Cancer Awareness are used for veterinary care for dogs with cancer whose families are financially unable to provide treatment.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers & Donating Semi-Repost

I like to think that I have raised my children to be passionate about helping others in need, especially when it involves other children. Teaching them while young that no matter what your financial circumstances are, there are families out there who need a hand up in life and this will hopefully stick with them for years to come.

Awhile back, while enjoying a slice of pizza they had earned in church, their Awana leaders brought out a collection of baby bottles with adorable designs on them. The leaders encouraged each child to take a bottle home and collect change no matter how much, even if just a few pennies. Each one of my two children asked for a bottle and I too, asked for one. We had a total of 3 baby bottles to fill up with change. The deadline was the end of January.

Why was the church collecting change? January 17th, is "Sanctity of Human Life" day and they were raising funds to donate to a "Save-a-life" center in our county which provides assistance to mothers in need of maternity clothing, baby necessities such as formula & clothing as well as various other maternal/infant needs.

As soon as we came home I had noticed the sound of change clinking and I came in to find my children adding all of the change they had been saving to the bottles. I am incredibly proud of them! They were donating every single penny, dime, nickel and quarter to the charity. My heart is filled with so much joy knowing that my children are willing to give up a future shopping trip to help a mother and her child. I added all of my change to my bottle also.

If you should happen to have a center in your area, please check to see if they need any donations. You could donate funds, gently used clothing (Maternity & infant), gently used nursery furniture, baby formula, etc. While living in California, the center in that area was called "Crisis pregnancy center" and they helped me when I was pregnant with my first born. The center provided me with a week's worth of maternity clothing, a box of infant clothing and counseling services to help with any questions on parenting I might have. We had planned our son but, we did need a hand up at the time with a few necessities and this place was a real blessing. I had donated items back several times through the years to show my gratitude.

Many of these mothers have considered abortion or giving their children up for adoption. These centers help the mothers through this time in their life and a majority of those who visit the centers make the decision to have their child. Other mothers already know that they want to be a mother and just need a little help. Please remember them the next time you choose to donate to a worthy cause.

TORNADO PREPAREDNESS

In the past week, mother nature has proven once again just how violent she can be. Hundreds of lives lost, thousands displaced, moderate and severe damages....my heart goes out to all of those affected by this system they say happens to be the worse storm in decades. I'm not going to lie, I was frightened!

Please don't do as my husband and I did...we stood there watching and praying while watching the tornado clouds heading towards our home as we didn't have anywhere to protect ourselves. The shock and overwhelming feelings took over. Don't let this happen to you! My husband and I are in the midst of preparing better plans for any future tornadic storms. Our home was spared and we are very grateful and thankful to be alive and still have a home.

A website that is rich in good information, please check this website for tips, pictures and other important information:
NOAA Tornado guide

Here is a small snippet from the website listed above-

-Get out of automobiles.
-Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car; instead, leave it immediately.
-Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes and should be abandoned.

Here are some simple steps to building your kit: This information was found on
Ready.gov which also provides many more informational sections on emergencies. Keep items in a large/sturdy trash can with a lid or other source with a lid.

***Basic Emergency Supply Kit:
*Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation

*Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food

*Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both

*Flashlight and extra batteries

*First aid kit

*Whistle to signal for help

*Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place

*Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

*Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

*Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
Local maps

*****************************************************************

***Additional Items to Consider Adding to an Emergency Supply Kit:

*Prescription medications and glasses

Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

*Fire Extinguisher

*Matches in a waterproof container

*Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items

*Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels

A few Mississippi storm pictures

The intense storms that have hit the south and surrounding areas had spawned several tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Towns have been wiped out, lives have been lost. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who have lost loved ones or your homes.

I only took a few pictures during yesterdays storms. To be honest, I didn't really think about it or would have taken several more. The storms were frightening and the news reports that this was the worst they have witnessed in decades.

I urge those who were not affected to open your hearts to those who are currently suffering from such losses. If you are close enough, they could use food, water, shelter, clothing, rescue efforts, etc. I'm sure they are also taking monetary donations, currently I have no information on where you could donate.

I will be preparing another awareness post regarding weather preparedness. Please, stay safe!!

Damage to our nephew and brother in laws cars from the hail, see hail stones below.

Our nephew is holding 3 large, baseball sized hail stones. He sent this picture to us on Tuesday night. The hail is rapidly melting.

Outside of gas station, here comes another large system...see the green vehicle? It's mine and they are preparing to move it under the awning for protection if hail falls.

Still coming....

Almost here....

Taking shelter inside of the building at the gas station. Mind you, this is around 8:00 in the morning. Radar had picked up 2 tornadoes in this system.

At home now, here comes another serious system. This one has a tornado in it although, we couldn't see one.

Getting closer...

Taking shelter indoors while watching out the windows as it's almost here. The sounds were horrific! Loud roaring and my ears began ringing. This is right before it went over us. I was pacing and didn't take anymore pictures.

The rest of the pictures below were random pictures. Look! Blue sky! The clouds were incredibly beautiful even though they were dangerous and violent.
